Lois Hayes-Holland

My name is Lois Hayes Holland and I have been passionate about drawing and painting all my life and now spend time in my studio in Italy painting and indulging in my new passion for driftwood sculpture.

My landscapes have mostly been inspired by the surroundings of Altidona, my medieval hilltop village in Italy. It is idyllic with views over vineyards, olive groves and the sea.
I cannot resist flowers and I have them in my home at all times of the year. They often get translated into paint… nature is unbeatable!
The effect of light on objects is endlessly fascinating and the magic as they emerge upon the page is totally absorbing. I love it.

Decorative Realism is an expression coined from the influence of artists such as Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There is always an element of realism enhanced with decorative abstraction creating a unique piece of work.

Travel to new and exciting places is always inspiring. I am gradually building up a collection of new paintings to reflect this and they will appear in this new section of my website over the next few years. We live in a world full of beauty and wonder and the word “Gratitude” springs to mind for the well-spring of all that is good, that sometimes gets forgotten.

My work teaching art students required the ability to demonstrate every aspect of painting; from still life to portraiture and everything in between. This is reflected in my wide palette of subject matter and body of work.

My collection of Lois’ paintings has its roots in memories. Each has a special story to tell and is a constant reminder of the wonderful times we have shared on my visits to the UK.

It is as if the watercolour paintings emit an energy to touch the soul. The marrying of colours within each painting is exquisitely executed with fine precision of brushwork resulting in a resonating, visual experience which brings much joy into my daily life.

Thank you so much for last week’s course,  I feel so much more positive about my own work, and have learned a few more valuable things throughout the week from your good self. You definitely have that special quality which brings out the best in others, everybody did well and seemed to enjoy it so much, it seems to go ever so quickly, and therefore I’m looking forwards to seeing you again in January.

A multi talented, gregarious artist. Conveys her emotions about her subject with a deft touch of colour.  She can create a vivid image through to a dreamy impressionist style. Using a wide palette, her finished paintings are a delight to behold.

Lois’s delicacy and eye for detail in her varied Italian paintings create an extraordinary impression of sunshine, nature and history in a perfect combination.
